About the study place

The University of Auckland is located in Auckland on the North Island of New Zealand, with its main campus centrally situated in the city centre.

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city, with around 1.7 million inhabitants in the greater metropolitan area, and is regarded as the country’s economic and cultural hub. The city has coastline on two sides and is surrounded by volcanic hills, beaches and green areas, offering excellent opportunities for outdoor activities within short distance of the city centre. Auckland has a vibrant urban and cultural life, with restaurants, concerts, festivals and a large international student community. According to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (regjeringen.no), New Zealand is considered a safe country to stay in, although the cost of living in Auckland is relatively high, particularly when it comes to housing.

The University of Auckland was founded in 1883 and is New Zealand’s largest and highest‑ranked university. It is particularly well known for strong academic environments in social sciences, economics, law, education, health, technology, natural sciences and the humanities. The university is integrated into the city, with buildings spread across the area and a partly traditional campus character. Student life takes place both on campus and in the surrounding city.
