About the study place

Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) is located in Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil. The university has several campuses throughout the city.

Salvador is one of Brazil’s oldest cities. Around four million people live in the greater metropolitan area, and the city is an important cultural centre known for its strong Afro‑Brazilian heritage, music, dance, cuisine and historic architecture. Salvador is located on the coast and offers beaches, a warm climate and a rich urban and cultural life. The cost of living is generally somewhat lower than in major cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. According to travel advice from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visitors to Brazil are advised to exercise caution. It is important to remain attentive to personal safety and follow local advice, especially in urban areas and when travelling in the evening (regjeringen.no).

UFBA was founded in 1946 and is one of the leading public universities in northern Brazil. It is a comprehensive university and is particularly well known for strong academic environments in social sciences, humanities, arts and cultural studies, health and life sciences, education and music. The campuses are integrated into the urban environment, and much of student life takes place in the city. You need to know the language both in order to study and to get the most out of everyday life here. You can take a Portuguese language course before the semester starts, which we recommend to everyone.
