University of Iowa
About the study place
The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City in the state of Iowa, in the Midwestern United States.
Iowa City is a mid‑sized university town with approximately 75,000 residents, where the university strongly shapes both city life and everyday routines. Students encounter an active and inclusive student environment, short distances, and a slower pace than in the largest U.S. cities. Iowa City has been designated a UNESCO City of Literature and offers a rich cultural scene with bookstores, literary events, concerts and festivals. Nature and green spaces are easily accessible, with parks and walking trails along the Iowa River. The cost of living in Iowa City is generally lower than in most major U.S. cities and lower than in Norway. Housing in particular is relatively affordable compared with many other university towns in the United States. At the same time, it is important to be aware that students in the U.S. must have comprehensive private health insurance, as healthcare services can be very expensive if paid out of pocket. According to travel advice from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (regjeringen.no), the United States is generally considered safe.
The University of Iowa was founded in 1847 and is a large public research university. It is particularly well known for strong academic environments in health and medicine, nursing, psychology, social sciences, education, arts and the humanities. The university also has a renowned writing and literature tradition, notably through the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The University of Iowa combines high research activity with a campus‑based student experience. For OsloMet students, the University of Iowa can be an attractive exchange destination for those seeking academic quality and a classic American university experience in a manageable and student‑friendly setting.
