About the study place

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) is located in the major city of Bangalore in southern India. Bangalore is one of the world’s 30 largest cities in terms of population. In Bangalore, you will find everything a large metropolitan city has to offer: restaurants representing cuisines from around the world, museums, galleries, sports arenas, shopping streets, and varied architecture. You should also be prepared for heavy traffic and high noise levels, although Bangalore is known as one of India’s “greener cities,” with many public parks.

When you arrive on the NIMHANS campus, you may first be struck by its size, but also by the calm and tranquil environment it has managed to create in the middle of a bustling megacity. NIMHANS is a combination of a university, a research institution, and a hospital, with many different buildings and departments. It is primarily located on the main campus in Bangalore, but also has several local branches elsewhere in the city and across the country. NIMHANS is designated as a “centre of national importance,” meaning it has a mandate to advise and support institutions working in the field of mental health throughout India. Its work is recognized far beyond India’s borders.

NIMHANS has a large number of departments and centers covering most areas related to mental health and neuroscience. Here, you will be able to undertake a varied and challenging practical placement, while also having the opportunity to get to know India over time.

  • Housing

    When you go on exchange to NIMHANS, you will live on the university and hospital campus in student hostels. Accommodation is organized by NIMHANS, and which hostel or hostels are used may vary from year to year. You should be prepared to share a room with one or more fellow students.
