About the study place

Nelson Mandela University is located in the city of Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

Gqeberha is a coastal city with around 1.3 million inhabitants, known for its beaches, coastal scenery and mild climate. The city offers good opportunities for outdoor activities such as surfing, swimming, hiking and weekend trips to nature reserves and safari parks in the region. The pace of life is slower than in larger South African cities, and the cost of living is relatively low. It is important to be aware that the security situation is quite different from that in Norway, and visitors should always remain attentive to safety in South Africa and follow local advice, particularly regarding transport and movement outside campus areas (regjeringen.no).

Nelson Mandela University was established in 2017 through the merger of several higher education institutions. The university is named after South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela, who is internationally known for his struggle against apartheid. The university places strong emphasis on social justice and community engagement. Its campuses are green and spread across several locations, with libraries, student housing, sports facilities and social meeting places.
