About the study place
The University of Ghana is located in the suburb of Legon, just outside Accra, the capital of Ghana.
Accra is Ghana’s largest and most important city, a vibrant and rapidly developing urban area with a large and youthful student population, markets, restaurants, a lively music and cultural scene, and close proximity to the coast. The climate is tropical, with warm temperatures throughout the year and a rainy season during parts of the year. For students, Accra offers insight into everyday life and societal conditions in West Africa, and the city also serves as a good base for travel within the region. At the same time, students should be prepared for heavy traffic, unpredictable infrastructure and clear social inequalities. According to travel advice from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (regjeringen.no), Ghana is considered one of the more stable and safe countries in the region, but visitors are advised to exercise normal caution, particularly with regard to traffic, health and personal safety.
The University of Ghana was founded in 1948 and is the country’s oldest and largest university. It is regarded as a leading academic institution in West Africa and offers a broad range of academic disciplines. The university has a high level of research activity, a large and diverse student population, and plays an important role in social development both nationally and regionally.
