About the study place

Annousakeio Therapeutic Center is a rehabilitation centre run by a voluntary non-profit organisation with roots in the Greek Orthodox Church. It was founded in 1970 and is located on the outskirts of the quiet little town of Kissamos (sometimes referred to as Kasteli) in Crete.

Kissamos is a small harbour town with traditional cafes and taverns along the seafront. From the harbour you can join boat trips to, for example, the Balos lagoon or the Peloponnese peninsula. The place goes from a sleepy existence during the winter to buzzing with life in the summer months. For those interested in history, Falasarna is well worth a visit, you will be able to learn more about Crete's history through the archaeological excavations taking place there. The place is also known for its beautiful sunsets!

Annousakeio Therapeutic Center works closely with the local community. In addition to modern rehabilitation facilities and bedside posts, they seek out the municipality's residents in even the most remote mountain villages, through their "home care nursing programme", which is based on a model from Great Britain and the Nordic countries. They also have programmes for food distribution, vaccination and dental health, in addition to organizing social and cultural gatherings for residents of the local community. The centre's staff work interdisciplinary, with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, social workers, orthopedists, speech therapists, psychiatrists and other associated professional groups  on a more or less permanent basis. The core activity is rehabilitation and preventive health work, especially aimed at those of the region's inhabitants who, for various reasons, do not have a network of family and friends who can help in everyday life. Exchange to the Annousakeio Therapeutic Center will give you the opportunity to get close to the Greek culture and the daily life of the island!
