About the study place
Tampereen yliopisto (Tampere University) is located in Tampere in southern Finland, approximately 180 kilometres north of Helsinki.
Tampere is Finland’s third‑largest city and is known as an important student city with an active cultural scene. The city lies between the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, offering good opportunities for outdoor activities such as swimming, kayaking, hiking in nearby forest areas, and winter sports like cross‑country skiing and ice skating. Tampere has a compact city centre, short distances and a well‑developed public transport system. The climate is slightly cooler than in southern Norway.
Tampere University was established through a merger in 2019, when, among others, the former University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology were combined. The university is research‑intensive and has a strong interdisciplinary profile. It is particularly strong in social sciences, technology, health, education, communication and information technology—areas that may be relevant for many OsloMet students.
