Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course students are able to

  • identify and evaluate influencing factors, potential areas of improvement and relationships between product, company, industry sector, society and sustainable development
  • perform mappings and surveys of product concepts within a specific context
  • visualize concepts/mappings and articulate complex ideas in the context of a greater system in order to bring the discussion concerning product and system development to a strategic level
  • develop short and long term strategy for products in light of a context or a system
  • design 3D product concepts as a result of contextual studies
  • suggest evaluation criteria for the assessment of  examination objects
  • safely and efficiently test and construct physical models of products in the workshops using material-based methods

Teaching and learning methods

The most important teaching and learning methods for this course are group work, lectures, discussions, studio courses and tutoring.

Course requirements

  • One reflection paper.
  • One group assignment and peer-group presentation.

Assessment

Individual or group [1] portfolio examination. The portfolio consists of

  • a report describing the product concept

  • design process documentation

  • a physical 3D product model

The examination result can be appealed against.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

No restrictions.

Grading scale

A grading scale of A (highest) to F (lowest) where A to E is a pass grade and F is a fail grade.

Examiners

One internal. External examiner is used periodically.

[1] On a professional basis, students may apply to sit the examination group. Applications should be submitted lecturer/person with course responsibility at the start of the course.
