Course history

Required preliminary courses

Students must have passed the course Clinical Studies in Cancer Nursing 1 (KREFTPRA1) before starting this course.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has specialised knowledge in the field of cancer nursing
  • has in-depth knowledge of cancer prevention
  • has in-depth knowledge of rehabilitation processes in connection with cancer
  • has in-depth knowledge of the interaction between the specialist health service and the primary healthcare service in the follow-up of cancer patients
  • has in-depth knowledge of cancer patients towards the end of life and their next of kin's experiences, reactions and needs
  • is capable of analysing problems relating to cancer nursing on the basis of the discipline's history, traditions, distinctive nature and place in society

Skills

The student

  • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to different sources of information and of using them to structure and formulate cancer nursing argumentation
  • is capable of applying the principles of pedagogy and subject didactics when informing, teaching and providing guidance to patients and next of kin from different cultures, as well as to colleagues and other
  • is capable of using relevant development work methods in an independent manner
  • is capable of coordinating and practice palliative nursing to cancer patients in cooperation with the patient, their next og kin and others in interdisciplinary cooperation  
  • is capable of coordinating and practice nursing to cancer patients towards the end of life in cooperation with the patient, their next og kin and others in interdisciplinary cooperation  
  • is capable of independent work on practical and theoretical problem-solving relating to the cancer nurse's functions and areas of responsibility throughout the course of the illness:
    • is capable of observing, assessing, identifying and evaluating a patient's general and special needs, resources and problems through communication and cooperation with the patient and his/her next of kin
    • is capable of independently identifying and assessing different patient situations, prioritising and acting in a satisfactory manner to address the patient's needs

  • is capable of contributing to new ideas and innovation processes in cancer nursing

Teaching and learning methods

Six weeks of supervised clinical training, self-study and, if relevant, group work. The course is taken in the specialist health service or the municipal health service.

Course requirements

The following coursework requirements must be met before a student can receive an assessment for the course:

  1. Specification of learning outcomes for the course.  
  2. Assignment 1: The cancer nurse's responsibilities and duties in relation to professional development and teaching. The student, preferably in consultation with his/her practical training supervisor, will identify a topic related to cancer nursing and prepare a plan for teaching the topic.
  • Written individually, or in groups if several students take their practical training on the same ward.
  • Oral presentation to the ward/practical training establishment.
  • The syllabus selected by the students shall be used in the assignment.
  • The students receive oral feedback from their practical training supervisor and/or from the lecturer.

Assessment

The assessments are based on the learning outcomes for the course, the student's specification of the learning outcomes and the formative assessment made of the student during the course.

Students' practical training can only be assessed if their attendance is sufficiently high.

  • Less than 10% absence: The student can complete the practical training course as normal.
  • 10-20% absence: If possible, the student can make up for the practical training missed, by agreement with the practical training supervisor and the university supervisor.
  • More than 20% absence: The student must retake the whole practical training course.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

Not relevant.

Grading scale

Pass-fail.

Examiners

Summative assessment by at least one representative from the practical training establishment. The final decision on whether to award a pass or fail grade is made by the university.
