After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has in-depth knowledge of complications related to cancer, advanced cancer treatment and cancer nursing
  • has in-depth knowledge of how to prevent and relieve complications related to cancer treatment

Skills

The student

  • is capable of taking care of patients who are undergoing treatment
  • is capable of independent work on practical and theoretical problem-solving relating to the cancer nurse's functions and areas of responsibility:
    • is capable of observing, assessing, identifying and evaluating a cancer patient's general and special needs, resources and problems through communication and cooperation with the patient and his/her next of kin in an age and multicultural perspective
    • is capable of helping patients and their families to cope with cancer and the expected and potential outcomes of the disease
    • is capable of identifying and acting competently in acute and problematic situations
    • is capable of administering cytostatic medication in accordance with the applicable rules and handling cytostatic waste in accordance with regulations
    • is capable of contributing to the prevention of late effects following cancer treatment
    • is capable of observing, assessing, identifying, intervening and evaluating troublesome symptoms experienced by cancer patients in connection with cancer and cancer treatment
    • is capable of safeguarding cancer patients' autonomy and co-determination
    • is capable of administering and evaluating pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical symptom relief
    • is capable of administering advanced oncological treatment delegated by a doctor
    • is capable of helping the patient to acquire new patterns of behaviour to compensate for illness, negative consequences of cancer treatment or late effects of cancer treatment
    • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to theories and methods in cancer nursing
    • is capable of using relevant medical technology equipment used in the treatment of cancer patients
  • is capable of, with some supervision, preventing and relieving crises in cancer patients and next of kin through communication and information and by promoting a secure and therapeutic environment

General competence

The student

  • is capable of analysing relevant academic and professional ethics issues in cancer nursing based on relevant discipline, research, experience and patient knowledge
  • is capable of communicating about issues, analyses and conclusions in cancer nursing with professionals
  • is capable of participating actively in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation on patient treatment in accordance with his/her own competence and applicable ethical principles and legal guidelines
  • is capable of taking a critical approach to the possibilities, limitations and consequences of cancer treatment
  • is capable of quality assuring cancer nursing by means of written and oral documentation

Teaching and learning methods

Six weeks of supervised clinical training and self-study. Clinical training is carried out in the specialist health service at units that administer radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Course requirements

The following coursework requirements must be met before a student can receive an assessment for the course:

  1. Specification of learning outcomes for the course.  
  2. Assignment 1: The cancer nurse's responsibilities and duties in relation to the patient during the treatment phase.
  • Written individually, or in groups if several students take their practical training on the same ward.
  • Maximum length: 2,000 words
  • The assignment is to be presented at the unit.
  • The syllabus selected by the students shall be used in the assignment.
  • The students receive written feedback from their fellow students on this assignment.

Assessment

The assessments are based on the learning outcomes for the course, the student's specification of the learning outcomes and the formative assessment made of the student during the course.

Students' practical training can only be assessed if their attendance is sufficiently high.

  • Less than 10% absence: The student can complete the practical training course as normal.
  • 10-20% absence: If possible, the student can make up for the practical training missed, by agreement with the practical training supervisor and the university supervisor.
  • More than 20% absence: The student must retake the whole practical training course.

Grading scale

Pass-fail.

Examiners

Summative assessment by one representative from the practical training establishment. The final decision on whether to award a pass or fail grade is made by the university.
