Course history

Introduction

Through this course, the students will gain experience of project work, writing scientific reports and the use of specialist literature. The students will gain insight into the day-to-day work of engineers and the importance of health and safety procedures (HSE).

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student:

  • has a basic understanding of the engineering profession and the role that engineers play in society and working life
  • is familiar with the basic principles of project work
  • is familiar with the basic principles behind scientific work methods, including searching for, assessing and using specialist literature
  • is familiar with presenting scientific information, both orally and in writing
  • has insight into relevant work for engineers in the fields of biotechnology and chemistry

Skills

The student is capable of:

  • defining a research question of relevance to the field
  • performing literature searches and exercising source criticism
  • searching for and assessing relevant specialist literature
  • writing a report with a reference list
  • give a presentation, both orally and in writing

General competence

The student is capable of:

  • working on a project
  • working in compliance with laboratory safety rules
  • performing simple biotechnology and chemistry laboratory experiments

Teaching and learning methods

The teaching is organised as lectures, laboratory experiments, exercises and project work.

Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam. The group size for all required coursework is 2-8 students:

  • project work in groups
  • presentation of the project in groups
  • laboratory experiment in the biotechnology and chemical laboratories, with report

Assessment

The students need to deliver a portfolio that contain a project report and lab reports. The students needs to attend the obligatory teaching session. 

The exam result can be appealed.

Grading scale

Pass / Fail.

Examiners

Two internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.

Overlapping courses

The course has an overlap of 10 credits with KJFE1200.

Under the rule that students have three attempts to take an exam, attempts in equivalent courses also count.
