Course history

Introduction

On completion of the course, the students will have gained an understanding of the electrical properties of linear circuits and how basic circuits can be designed based on specifications. The course also gives a basic introduction to electromagnetics and confers 3 credits in physics.

Required preliminary courses

No requirements over and above the admission requirements.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student is capable of:

  • solving basic dc and ac circuits
  • have a good knowledge of the physical laws that apply to electrical circuits
  • can account for electric and magnetic fields
  • have a good knowledge of methods for analyzing DC circuits
  • analysing transient states in RL and RC circuits
  • analysing inverting and non-inverting circuit solutions using operational amplifiers
  • knowing the basic structure of electric motors and generators
  • have knowledge of three-phase systems

Skills

The student is capable of:

  • using instruments such as a voltmeter, ammeter and oscilloscope
  • designing circuits based on diagrams and troubleshooting hardware if necessary
  • explaining the function(s) of a circuit
  • using manufacturer manuals and data sheets

General competence

The student is capable of:

  • analysing a problem and specifying a solution method
  • discussing and justifying own choices and priorities in relation to electric circuits
  • explaining the historical development of the field of electricity

Teaching and learning methods

Theory lectures, laboratory work, company visits and a large-scale project carried out in project groups. The goal of the project is to give the students insight into what type of tools and methods engineers use to illustrate and show results.

Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:

  • five lab exercises with presence

All laboratorie exersices is to be written in a book with a hard cover. Each exercise must be solved and the results approved during the assigned hours in the time schedule. The complete book must be delivered to the lecturer the day after the last laboratory exercise.

Assessment

Individual written exam, 3 hours.

The exam result can be appealed.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

A handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication or to perform symbolic calculations. If the calculator’s internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Random checks may be carried out.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

One internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.
