Introduction
The subject provides theoretical knowledge on the behavior of a reinforced concrete cross-section and practical knowledge on the design of prestressed concrete together with prefabricated reinforced concrete elements (beams, slabs, walls, frames) according to Eurocode 2.
Within the frame of the subject basic knowledge will be introduced on earthquake design of structures according to Eurocode 8.
The practical design according to Eurocode is supplemented by the introduction of the application of FE software in the calculations.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student
- has advanced knowledge of the theory and design of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete elements
- has basic knowledge on building of concrete elements
- has the basic understandig on the earthquake design of concrete structures according to Eurocode 8
Skills
The student is capable of
- can explain the behavior of prestressed concrete
- can dimension prestressed concrete structure in ultimate and serviceability limit state according to NS-EN 1992 1-1
- can perform stability calculations and dimension walls and joints in concrete buildings according to NS-EN 1992 1-1 and the "Betongelementboken"
- can dimension reinforced concrete structures according to NS-EN 1992 1-1
General competence
The student is capable of
- acquiring new academic knowledge through literature studies
- compiling and evaluating professional literature, as well as disseminate this in writing
- making independent assessments of alternative technical solutions
- evaluating the results obtained from a design software
Teaching and learning methods
The teaching consists of lectures, project work and exercises.
Course requirements
The following work requirements are compulsory and must be approved to be admitted to the exam:
- three of four individual exercises (each exercise takes about 8 hour work)
Students who fail to meet the coursework requirements can be given up to one re-submission opportunity before the exam.
Assessment
Type of assessment:: 3 hours individual written exam
Exam results can be appealed.
A resit or rescheduled exam may take the form of an oral exam. If oral exams are used for resits and rescheduled exams, the exam results cannot be appealed.
Permitted exam materials and equipment
All printed and written aids as well as approved calculator from list. If the calculator has the option of storing in the internal memory, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Samples can be made.
Grading scale
Grade scale A-F.
Examiners
One internal examiner. External examiners are used regularly.
If oral exam is been used at new/exposed exam, two examiners are used regularly.
