Course history

Introduction

The course consists of two parts. The physics part should be able to provide the students with basic physics knowledge and skills that help to lay a scientific foundation for work on the technological topics.

Through the chemistry part, the student will acquire basic knowledge in chemistry.

Required preliminary courses

None beyond admission requirements.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, the student has the following learning outcomes, defined as knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student:

  • has knowledge of fluid statics and fluid dynamics that involve learning about fluid pressure, the continuity equation and Bernoulli's equation
  • can explain the 1st and 2nd law of thermodynamics
  • has knowledge of the concepts of heat capacity and heat transfer
  • has knowledge of the periodic system and the construction of atoms
  • understands simple chemical reaction equations
  • has knowledge of the state equation for ideal gases
  • understands simple models for chemical bonding in molecules
  • understands simple models for chemical bonding in semiconductors and metals
  • understands what is meant by chemical equilibrium
  • has basic knowledge of electrochemistry

Skills

The student:

  • can calculate pressure variation in a flowing liquid as well as flow quantity and flow rate
  • can calculate the transfer of heat energy (thermal conductivity, convection)
  • can perform stoichiometric calculations for a given chemical equilibrium
  • can use the equation of state for ideal gases in calculations
  • can perform simple calculations for galvanic cells and electrolysis cells

General competence

The student:

  • is able to apply the knowledge and skills to practical physics problems
  • can apply the knowledge and skills to practical chemistry problems

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures and exercises.

Course requirements

The following coursework requirements are mandatory and must be approved in order to take the exam:

  • 3 out of 6 individual exercises in physics
  • 3 out of 6 individual exercises in chemistry

Assessment

Individual written exam of 3 hours.

The exam results can be appealed.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

Handheld calculator that does not communicate wirelessly and cannot count symbolically. Own notes. If the calculator has the possibility of storage in internal memory, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Spot checks can be made.

Grading scale

Graded scale A-F.

Examiners

An internal sensor. External sensor is used regularly
