This PhD course is open for candidates at the PhD Program in Educational Sciences for Teacher Education, other PhD candidates and academic employees.

Language: English (and Norwegian, dependent on the language of participants).

In this PhD course, epistemological, methodological, and ethical perspectives on action research will be presented, discussed and related to examples of research projects. Reflections on connections between epistemological conceptual frameworks and practical choices in educational action research are emphasized.

On completion of the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

The candidate

  • has in-depth knowledge of epistemological and methodological perspectives on Action Research projects
  • has in-depth knowledge of the role of the researcher in action research projects

Skills

The candidate:

  • has gained methodological competence in understanding and engaging in Action Research at a sufficiently high level to develop knowledge in his/her field of study.
  • can give academically competent written presentations of a relevant topic within action research

General competence

The candidate:

  • can identify and establish constructive connections between theories, empirical data, and practices based on developed methodological competence in Action Research
  • has sufficient ethical competence to identify relevant ethical challenges in his/her research process.

Arbeids- og undervisningsformer

Organised tuition is given in the form of lectures and seminars. Candidates are expected to actively participate in all the teaching activities. Candidates will receive academic supervision on writing essays.

Arbeidskrav og obligatoriske aktiviteter

Emnet fokuserer på utvikling, planlegging og produksjon av praktisk-estetiske og kunstneriske prosjekter i ulike estetiske feltet. Det legges vekt på ideutvikling gjennom praktiske forprosjekter, presentasjoner, formidling og visninger av studentenes eget arbeid. Studentenes praktiske arbeid settes i sammenheng med relevante samtidsdiskurser knyttet til den enkeltes interessefelt og bredere forskningskontekst. Emnet omfatter også eksempler på perspektiver på globalisering, økologi, mangfold og kjønn i det estetiske feltet. Emnet setter praktiske og organisatoriske prosjekter i ulike kunstfelt i en videre kunnskapsbasert ramme.

Studenten:

  • har inngående kunnskap om utvikling av prosjektarbeid i en forskningskontekst
  • har inngående kunnskap om relevante nordiske og internasjonale samtidsdiskurser
  • kan gjennomføre prosjektarbeid på bakgrunn av etisk og faglig analyse og refleksjon
  • har bred kunnskap innenfor studieretningens kompetanseområder og spesialisert innsikt i et definert område

Ferdigheter

Studenten:

  • kan planlegge, gjennomføre og dokumentere et selvstendig faglig prosjekt.
  • kan anvende faglig kunnskap til å utforme, diskutere og velge relevante presentasjons- og formidlingsformer
  • kan orientere seg i det nordiske og internasjonale kunst- og kulturfeltet og bruke aktuelle referanser for å formulere selvstendige, faglige resonnement og posisjoner

The essay will be assessed by the course coordinator and a member of the academic staff involved in the PhD program.

Target Group

The target group is PhD candidates/students who plan to conduct Action Research projects and want to learn more about epistemology, methodology, and ethics related to their own work

Admission requirements

The requirements for admission include completing a five-year master's program (integrated or consisting of a three-year bachelor's program and a two-year master's program, in total 300 ECTS) in the fields of teacher education, other pedagogical disciplines, educational science, development studies, social sciences, or other relevant areas related to the PhD programme. The master's degree should include a substantial independent project equivalent to a master's thesis (minimum 30 ECTS). In case of a large number of applicants, PhD-students enrolled in the PhD programme in Educational Sciences for Teacher Education will be prioritized, then students in other PhD-programmes, then academic employees at the Faculty of Teacher Education and International Studies.

Applicants who are not enrolled in the PhD programme at the Faculty of Education and International Studies at OsloMet must send a summary in English of maximum one A4 sheet with relevant information about their own project/area of interest, containing topic, methodology, theoretical approach, and why this course might be relevant for their project.
