Programme description
Course history

Introduction

This module looks at some of the different approaches used to support the design process; from ideas generation and concept development to making and refining prototypes. Students will explore this through a series of creative exercises and given tasks. The module seeks to develop the students' exploratory abilities and challenge conventional thinking, while building and developing foundational design skills. The module explores both analogue and digital media.

On completion of this module students should have achieved the following learning outcomes, defined as knowledge, skills and general competency:

Knowledge 

The student

  • understands key methodologies applicable for ideas generation and concept development; as well as for designing and prototyping products, creativity and innovation  
  • is able to explain relationships between experimental design methods and product development
  • is aware of function of aesthetics in relation to products
  • has basic knowledge of the shared principles of identity and branding

Skills

The student

  • is able to consider, discuss and apply different material and aesthetic properties
  • is able to amass research and analyse and apply this to research questions
  • is capable of using basic 2D and 3D materials for ideation, analysis and product development
  • is able to explore and develop ideas and concepts
  • is able to document and present developmental processes

 

General Competency

The student

  • is capable of selecting and applying appropriate creative methods for developing concepts and products
  • is capable of demonstrating a reflexive attitude to their own practice and capable of making appropriate adjustments to this in response to advise from tutors
  • is capable of reflecting over links between theory and practice relative to products

Content

This module explores methods and processes aimed at generating ideas and concepts in support of product development.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, demonstrations, workshops, individual assignments and group work.

Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  • Reflection note

Assessment

Individual portfolio assessment subject to the following requirements:

  • Product
  • Documentation of process (2D and 3D material explorations)

All components of the portfolio must be passed in order to pass the module examination.

Exam results can be appealed.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All.

Examiners

Two internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.
