Course history

Introduction

The thesis gives the students an opportunity to delve into an area in the field of radiotherapy. The purpose of the thesis is for the students to develop their ability to work systematically towards a goal by applying scientific work methods to a research question. The thesis is carried out in groups, enabling the students to further develop their abilities to work together in an academic community on professional development and the implementation of new knowledge in practice.

Scope of the course: 10 credits

  • Research methods: 2 credits
  • Thesis: 8 credits

STRÅL6020 must be approved before the student can take the exam in the course STRÅL6200

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • can give an account of and assess scientific methods and work methods that are relevant for the topic of the thesis
  • can discuss research ethics guidelines
  • can critically assess new research in the field of the topic of the thesis

Skills

The student

  • can define and develop a research question and project plan
  • can choose and justify the choice of method in relation to the chosen research question
  • can obtain, analyse and take a critical approach to different sources of information
  • can plan and carry out a scientific project
  • can structure theory, method, discussion and a conclusion into a scholarly text

General competence

The student

  • can critically reflect on ethical issues in research
  • can present and discuss issues, analyses and conclusions of research results in the field of radiotherapy
  • can communicate, discuss and critically assess the results of his/her own project work
  • can apply his/her own knowledge to new areas for the purpose of carrying out work assignments and projects, and contribute new ideas to further develop the field of radiotherapy

Teaching and learning methods

Work and teaching methods include digital lectures, seminars, self-study and project work in groups under supervision.

The thesis is normally carried out as a project in groups of two to four students. The groups are allocated a supervisor after a topic has been chosen, and will receive up to ten hours of supervision.

Course requirements

The following required coursework must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  • minimum 80 per cent attendance at seminars
  • project plan in accordance with specified criteria. The project plan must be approved before work on the project begins

Assessment

Combined assessment:

Part 1) Thesis in groups of 2-4 students with  a scope of up to 4,500 words (not including summary, tables, figure text, reference list and possible appendices).

The thesis must be written and submitted as an article in either Norwegian or English.   

Part 2) Individual oral exam, up to 30 minutes.

The thesis must be awarded a pass grade, i.e. A-E, in order for the student to take the oral exam. A preliminary grade is awarded for the thesis. The final grade is decided after the oral exam, and the grade can be adjusted up or down by one grade.

Students can appeal the grade awarded for the thesis. If the grade is changed after submitting an appeal, the student(s) must retake the oral exam.

Resit exam: If the thesis is awarded a fail grade, the student is entitled to submit one (1) reworked version of the thesis.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

Part 1) All aids are permitted.

Part 2) The students will receive a copy of their own thesis at the oral exam

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

Parts 1 and 2: Both the thesis and the oral exam are assessed by one internal and one external examiner.
