Course history

Introduction

The Profession of Nursing and Social Science comprises two main areas described in the national curriculum¿s main topic 1 - the nurse's technical and scientific basis, and main topic 4 - social sciences. The course is intended to contribute to the students' knowledge of the history, underlying philosophy and professional ethics of the nursing profession, and knowledge of the state and municipalities, and health and social policy.

Credits based on the national curriculum are:

  • Main topic 1 - 10 credits

  • Main topic 4 - 5 credits

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge: 

The student

  • has knowledge of nursing as a discipline, profession and science

  • can describe the history and tradition of nursing

  • is familiar with theory of science and different research methods

  • has knowledge of evidence-based practice

  • is familiar with professional and research critical debates

  • has knowledge of ethical theories and professional ethical principles

  • has knowledge of the state and municipalities, and health and social policy: the development of the welfare state and the relationship between social development, standard of living and individual health and social issues, and laws and regulations

  • has knowledge of patient safety and quality in nursing

  • has knowledge of cultural diversity in Norway

 

Skills: 

The student is capable of

  • finding, assessing and referring to relevant research articles in order to elucidate nursing issues, both orally and in writing

  • describing different ethical theories and principles

  • documenting nursing in a legally and professionally sound manner

 

Competence: The student is capable of

  • disseminating subject matter on the state and municipalities, and health and social knowledge, both orally and in writing

  • sharing opinions about ethical challenges, with particular emphasis on safeguarding patients¿ autonomy, integrity and dignity

Teaching and learning methods

Studiesamling i Oslo i kalenderuke 1 og 2 i 2021. Ellers forelesning, gruppearbeid, veiledning, workshop, seminar på digitale plattformer og selvstudier.

Course requirements

The following coursework must have been approved in order for a student to be permitted to take the exam:

Assignment 1

The profession of nursing:

1a) Ethical focus

Group assignment/individual Students will write an ethical reflection in groups with individual reflection note from the work Scope: 1,000 words (+/-20%) Feedback from the lecturer during the process The assignment will be presented and discussed in study groups with the study group supervisor.

 

1b) Focus on evidence-based practice

Group assignment The assignment will be presented using a given template at a seminar Scope: 1,000 words (+/-20%)

 

Assignment 2

State and municipal studies, health and social policy.

2a) Health and social law focus

Individual subject note. Scope of 2000 words (+/-20%).

2b) Focus on the structure and organisation of the health and care services.

Individual electronic multiple choice assignment - 100% correct and submitted by the deadline.

Assessment

Supervised individual written exam, 6 hours.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

Offprints of laws and regulations: the Health Care Act, the Health Personnel Act, the Act relating to the rights of patients and users, the Act relating to specialist health services, the Mental Health Care Act, as well as an approved dictionary.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

Each exam is assessed by two examiners, one external and one internal.
