Course history

Learning outcomes

A student who has completed his or her qualification has the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student has:

  • in-depth knowledge of different contributions to classic and modern social science theory
  • knowledge of how different theoretical perspectives provide a unique understanding of social phenomena
  • in-depth insight into theoretical concepts such as society, individual, power and state

Skills

The student is capable of

  • analysing and discussing social phenomena in light of social scientific concepts and theories
  • analysing the "person in the situation" from different analytical perspectives
  • using perspectives and theoretical terms in the analysis of professional practice

Competence

The student is capable of

  • taking a critical approach to knowledge that is produced
  • understanding the role ideologies can have in specific fields of knowledge
  • recognising different social theories and understanding how they problematise social phenomena in different ways

Teaching and learning methods

The teaching methods are lectures and seminars. Students are advised to take part in study groups.

Assessment

Students will take a six-hour written school exam.

Grading scale

A grade scale A - F.

Examiners

The exam is graded by an internal and an external examiner.

A random selection consisting of at least 25 % of the exam papers will be graded by both an internal and external examiner. This will inform the grading of the remaining exam papers.
