Course history

Introduction

The students are expected to learn basic thermodynamic concepts, the principles for the application of thermal energy, energy analysis and dimensioning methods for power production processes, combustion engines, gas turbines, refrigeration machines and heat pumps.

Required preliminary courses

No requirements over and above the admission requirements.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student is capable of explaining:

  • the properties of pure substances, phase equilibrium and equations of state
  • the law of energy for closed systems
  • the law of energy for open systems with stationary flow
  • entropy, changes of state, cycles, reversible and irreversible processes
  • circular processes for power production and refrigeration
  • Otto, diesel and gas turbine processes
  • refrigeration machines
  • heat pumps

Skills

The student is:

  • capable of carrying out energy analyses, dimensioning simple thermal processes, choosing a work medium and calculating energy utilisation

General competence

The student is:

  • capable of applying their knowledge to optimise energy production, rationalise energy consumption and improve the utilisation of renewable energy sources

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, exercises and project work.

Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:

  • Seven individual assignments
  • Two lab assignment

Assessment

Individual written exam, 3 hours.

The exam result can be appealed.

In the event of a resit or rescheduled exam, an oral examination may be used instead.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

A handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication or to perform symbolic calculations. If the calculator’s internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Random checks may be carried out.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

One internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.
