Course history

Introduction

Language of instruction: Norwegian

The purpose of this course is to provide the students with in-depth knowledge of medical treatment of cancer, and of how to practise responsible nursing of cancer patients and their relatives during treatment.

The course provides a broad theoretical basis for what cancer is, how it develops and different forms of treatment. Consequences treatment has for the patient and how cancer nurses should approach the patient are important aspects of the course. The course also includes a discussion on how cancer nurses must base their practice on the patient and relatives’ resources and experience of illness and treatment. Relief of symptoms and phenomena such as hope and quality of life are also important.

Required preliminary courses

The student must have been admitted to the Master’s Degree Programme in Health Sciences and hold authorisation as a general nurse.

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The student

  • can describe how cancer develops and is treated
  • can describe microbiological processes and infection prevention principles as they relate to cancer nursing
  • can describe the significance of cancer nationally and internationally with respect to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • can describe the effects and side effects of pharmaceuticals used in oncology
  • can analyse consequences of cancer and cancer treatment from an age perspective
  • can assess crisis, grief and coping strategies related to cancer
  • can discuss cancer nursing in different cultures
  • can analyse and take a critical approach to existing theories on patient experiences and reactions relating to cancer and cancer treatment from an age and multicultural perspective
  • can analyse and take a critical approach to existing theories in medical and surgical treatment of cancer

 

Skills

The student

  • can discuss, describe and assess nursing interventions for cancer patients and their next of kin from an age and multicultural perspective
  • can describe the practical implications of knowledge and research results in the field of cancer nursing

Teaching and learning methods

The course will use varied, student-active work methods. Work and teaching methods include lectures, group work, seminars and self-study.

Course requirements

The following must have been approved in order for the student to take the examination:

  • Written assignment with oral presentation, carried out in groups of up to four students. Scope: up to 2,000 words

The students will receive written feedback on the assignment from the lecturer and oral feedback from fellow students and the lecturer on the presentation.

Assessment

Supervised individual written examination, in the form of a multiple choice examination, four hours.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

None.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

One internal and one external examiner check the questions, and the internal examiner checks the answer papers.  

Overlapping courses

The course overlaps 10 ECTS with KREFT6100 The Platform of Knowledge in Cancer Nursing related to Science and Phenomenology 20 ECTS.
