Course history

Introduction

The course covers basic subjects in environmental engineering. The goal is to teach the students basic knowledge and skills in the planning, design, operation and maintenance of water and wastewater installations.

The course also provides a broad introduction to planning, design, analysis, modeling and assessment of sustainable water management and relevant water treatment solutions.

The course requires mandatory participation in laboratory teaching in the use of suitable software such as for example GIS (Mike Urban), PCSWMM, HEC-RAS and participation in inspections and excursions.

Required preliminary courses

No requirements over and above the admission requirements.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student is familiar with:

  • analyses, design, construction, operation and maintenance of water, wastewater and waste management infrastructure
  • waterworks hydrology, the quality of various sources of drinking water, water quality terminology and methods for water treatment
  • the impact of pollution on different recipients and methods for cleaning wastewater and dealing with sludge
  • regulations and standards for the establishment, operation and maintenance of water, wastewater and waste management plants
  • concepts, metrics, analysis methods and interpretation of water quality data measured in drinking water, wastewater, surface water and recipients in relation to official requirements

Skills

The student:

  • is capable of basic planning and design of distribution networks, pump stations and mechanical treatment facilities for water, sewage and surface water
  • is familiar with the principles for sustainable handling of residual products (waste)
  • masters important terminology in the field

General competence

The student is capable of:

  • reflecting on the choice of solutions for water, sewage, surface water and waste management in relation to safety and the surroundings
  • disseminating measurement data and their consequences

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, exercise sessions and laboratory sessions.

Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:

  • 6 compulsory practical exercises must be approved. These can be solved individually or in groups, but all exercises must be submitted in individual canvas folders within specified deadlines. The scope of work is about 2 hours of self-employment per exercise assignment.
  • approved participation in compulsory training in software (NovaPoint VA)

Assessment

Exam form: Individual written exam, 3 hours

The result of the exam can be appealed.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All printed and written aids, and a handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication or to perform symbolic calculations. If the calculator’s internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Random checks may be carried out.

Grading scale

Pass/fail.

Examiners

One internal examiner. External examiners are used regularly.
