Course history

Introduction

Construction and Shaping / Form gives the students theoretical knowledge and practical skills in exploring the relationship between concept development and construction/design.

Methods for exploring/analysing form and the development of prototypes/products are central aspects of the course.

Knowledge and skills in digital and analogue tools are used as a basis for product development.

Required preliminary courses

Admission to the programme.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • is capable of specifying design concepts and requirements specifications
  • is familiar with analytical and experimental methods of reproducing, developing and manipulating forms
  • understands the principles of 3D visualisation and computer-aided production using 3D printing, lasers or other automated processes
  • know the basic ideas behind algorithms and and how their use may constrain or enable work processes
  • is capable of discussing design solutions with the use of design terminology and prototype building
  • understands the principles governing:
    • the planning of prototype construction
    • design and product form language, such as semantic differential analysis and gestalt theory
    • the formulation of a design brief

Skills

The student

  • masters digital and manual prototype construction in a range of materials
  • is capable of using prototype building techniques and adapting these according to context and needs
  • is capable of using user insight when reproducing spatial forms
  • is capable of using drawing as a communication tool in the design process
  • is capable of developing and constructing forms and relating them to ideas and contexts

Competence

The student is capable of

  • explaining and presenting principle design solutions using visual and written tools
  • structuring and documenting the design process
  • critically reflecting on choices made in the design process
  • finding and using relevant methods for prototype building
  • being a positive agent of change in design with regards to leveraging the potential of technology

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, workshops and individual and group assignments.

Course requirements

Autumn 2020:

  • Reflection note

[Coursework before]: The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  • Participation in at least two milestone meetings with demonstrations of the student’s own progress.

Assessment

Portfolio assessment containing:

  • Exhibition with papers submitted for two assignments:
    • Individual assignment on form development to include: 15 sketches, at least 3 prototypes and visual reflections.
    • Group assignment on construction. Groups of approx. five students. The assignment comprises 10 mock-up models and a final prototype.
  • Individual written report to include the documented work process for the assignments and reflections on the student’s own learning process and results. Scope of 15-20 A4 pages.

Both parts of the portfolio must be passed (grade E or better) in order to pass the exam in the course.

The exam grade can be appealed.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All.

Grading scale

A grading scale from A - F, where A is the best grade and F is fail.

Examiners

Two internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.
