About the study place

The university of Cape Town (UCT) was founded in 1829 and is the oldest university in South Africa. It is regarded as the best research and teaching university in Africa as a whole.

UCT is spread over six campuses in the suburbs around Cape Town. The oldest place of study, Upper Campus, is i.a. home for the Faculties of Commerce, Engineering and the Built Enviroment,  and Humanities. Other Faculties include Health Sciences, Science and Law.

Cape Town is beautifully situated with the mountain formation Table Mountain as a backdrop for the city with its around 3 million inhabitants. The South African National Assembly has its seat here, even though Pretoria is the capital of the country. Cape Town has something for everyone. At the foot of the mountain is a large botanical garden with plants found only in South Africa. On one of the many beaches you can see Cape Penguins, or watch the annual surfing competition. At Victoria and Albert Waterfront you will find a fascinating combination of working harbour areas whilst shopping in one of the several hundred shops located there. In contrast, you can take the ferry from there to Robben Island where many of the leaders of the liberation movement ANC, including Nelson Mandela were imprisoned under the apartheid regime.

UCT is an inclusive and engaged research-intensive African university that inspires creativity through outstanding achievements in learning, discovery and citizenship; enhancing the lives of its students and staff; advancing a more equitable and sustainable social order and influencing the global higher education landscape.
